Winter Driving Tips

Let it snow…Let it snow….Let it snow

Though Maine’s worst storms aren’t in December, that’s when we see a spike in winter crashes. Why? Because even the most experienced drivers have forgotten how to drive in winter conditions. Here are some tips to keep you safe when the first snow flies and throughout the winter season.

  • Take it slow in ice and snow!
Stopping on snow or ice without skidding requires extra time and distance. Drive slowly – below posted speed limits - so you can adjust to the conditions. This is especially true at intersections, off ramps, bridges and shady areas where black ice can form without being noticed.
  • Don’t turn your four-wheel drive into an “off-road” vehicle!
Four-wheel drive may help you get going faster but it doesn’t help you stop sooner or maintain control better once you loose traction.
    Take it slow!
  • Allow extra room between vehicles.
Longer stopping distances and extra time are required during winter conditions to avoid chain reaction crashes.
  • Don’t take chances when pulling out in front of approaching vehicles.
Remember, when the pavement is wet, you may not be able to slow down and they may not be able to accelerate as quickly as you would on dry pavement.
  • Avoid using cruise control.
You need to be in full control when road conditions are wet or icy. Don’t let your cruise control make a bad decision for you.
  • Avoid any sudden or excessive actions while steering, braking or accelerating so you don’t loose control.
  • Brake early, brake slowly, brake correctly and never slam on the brakes.
If you have anti-lock brakes, press the pedal down firmly and hold it. If you don’t have anti-lock brakes, gently pump the pedal.
  • Stay alert!
Beware of what’s going on well ahead of you. Other vehicles can alert you to problem spots on the road which may give you the split second you need to avoid a crash. Needless to say, you can’t be alert if you’re on the phone so don’t let yourself get distracted.

Staff Access to Policies and Procedures

Employees of Home, Hope and Healing are given an Orientation Manual at the time of their New Hire Orientation.  The Orientation Manual contains many of the policies and procedures that directly affect the employees and their clients.  All other company policies are contained in the Home, Hope and Healing Policy Manual which is kept at the main office in Smithfield, ME.

There may be occasions when the company must change policies or give policies a different interpretation than previously made.  The company has the right to modify policies, both written and unwritten, as business requires.  Occasionally, the agency will mail out select policies to staff when the agency deems it necessary; when staff awareness of those policies is pertinent.

Employees are welcome to view the Policy Manual at the Home, Hope and Healing office during regular business hours.

Safety Awareness

One thing that is constant in life is change. What is safe today might very well not be safe tomorrow.  Home, Hope and Healing recognizes this and stresses the need for employees, clients and families to become cognizant of changes in the home environment. Specifically we are looking for changes that have the potential of becoming safety issues.

A safety review takes place when a case is opened but this does not guarantee the conditions in the home will remain safe. Managers and/or administrative staff need to be alerted to changes such as wear and tear on household items, medical equipment or changes in a client’s physical condition.

When a risk or hazard is identified, the agency needs to be alerted immediately. Care givers have the responsibility to act accordingly.  Their actions might include but are not limited to: notifying a physician and requesting new orders, requesting new equipment or modifying the environment. Regardless of the action a discussion with the family and/or client should always take place. Please remember the following:

  1. You are not out there alone
  2. We are not only concerned with the client’s health and safety but your health and safety as well.

Keeping a working environment safe requires teamwork and alertness to potential dangers. Don’t try to do it alone.  Our goal is to provide the best care possible with the safest resources available.
